Retracing the steps of Masataka Nakano

In his masterpiece Tokyo Nobody, Nakano spent 11 years collecting fragments of a Tokyo devoid of human life.

Seeing Tokyo, the world’s largest megalopolis, depicted in moments of stark silence is as compelling as it is unsettling.

Nakano also captured a very particular period in Tokyo’s history, witnessing the enduring effects of the collapse of the ‘bubble’ era and the ongoing expansion of Tokyo into the very sea that has hemmed it in since birth.

Now 20+ years on, I am under no illusion as to the difficulty involved in trying to recapture some of these moments in their original form. Tokyo stops for no one.

I am definitely going to enjoy trying though.
