Adrift on a penguin highway

Hiroyasu Ishida is not your typical anime director. By the time he became the first creator to join Studio Colorido, a studio established by producer Hideo Uda in 2011, Ishida had already released his debut short "Fumiko no Kokuhaku" while still in university. In 2018 his first feature-length film "Penguin Highway" premiered to almost universal acclaim, winning multiple awards as that year’s best animation feature in Japan. His follow up, "Drifting Home", was released on Netflix in September 2022.

These photos, taken just before the release of Drifting Home (雨を告げる漂流団地), were part of a project by the Archipel team that was released on their YouTube channel at the time of the film’s release.
